Airick Woodhead Talks His Next Doldrums LP

BY Stephen CarlickPublished Mar 4, 2013

Doldrums might have only just dropped his debut LP, Lesser Evil, through Arbutus a week ago, but from the sounds of it, Toronto and Montreal pop eccentric Airick Woodhead is already looking ahead to new sounds.

"I've come to a peaceful place with the album," he tells Exclaim! "But I'm definitely working on a lot of new stuff at the moment, and I'm excited about moving forward. I have demos and stuff."

Continued progress on what may become a new album will begin as soon as his stacked touring schedule subsides, with Woodhead explaining that the as-yet-untitled new LP will be less song-structured than his work on Lesser Evil.

"Over the summer, I'll work on it," he says. "I'm kind of going back to rampant thievery [sampling] of people's music. The way I'm composing right now is so fluid, 'cause my gear is so simple, I can get right into it. It's a nice process."

Not that he's forgotten his brand new LP, which he explains has "this trans-human aesthetic" and "warped humanity" due to musical technology "becoming far more organic-seeming and intuitive."

He asserts, "It was a huge learning process for me, making this record all by myself: producing, recording and writing all the songs. It was a butt-load of work. I don't want to shit-talk my own album — it's so good and you should all buy it — but I feel like now that I've learned all that from my first time, I'm ready and really excited to make another one. It's not the same as when you're a band. It's just a matter of your own ambition; you don't need to compromise at all, with anybody."

For now, fans have plenty to sink their teeth into with the excellent Lesser Evil. For more, catch Woodhead when Doldrums rolls through your town on his current tour.
