As the frontman of both Apollo Ghosts and COOL TV, Adrian Teacher has carved out a reputation as one of Vancouver's most prolific and loveable songwriters. Now, he's preparing to make the solo leap with a new EP, entitled Sorta Hafta, due out on May 5.
The five-song collection was recorded at Olympia, WA's Dub Narcotic Studios with K Records boss Calvin Johnson (of Beat Happening renown). A press release notes that the EP is "brief, witty, and melody-laden" and touches on various genres, with the whole thing clocking in at around 11 minutes.
The record is billed as Adrian Teacher and the Subs, and his backing band includes Apollo Ghosts/COOL TV collaborator Amanda P. on drums. The frontman duets with Julie Doiron on the folksy "Old Graffiti," while Johnson lends a spoken word breakdown to the acoustic funk of "Let's Call in Sick."

This is being billed as Teacher's solo debut, but it's worth pointing out that he released the solo 7-inch "Saint Pierre and Miquelon" / "Shoot the Rapids" in 2007 and has shared a couple of low-key digital collections over the years (including 2010's My Words Are Yours, using lyrics by Karl Blau). He also released an ambient album under the name Arbutus.
