Add Insult To Injury

BY Ian DanzigPublished Dec 1, 2000

UK analogue synth enthusiasts continue their farcical adventures on their third album, Add Insult To Injury. Taking a more light-hearted approach, the album derives inspiration from many points on the pop culture map, including '60s go-go, porn, spy movies and archaic sci-fi. On "Monster Bobby" they go for the Gary Glitter-styled one-riff rock anthem while "Incinerator No. 1" combines electro-squelch with big driving rock rhythms. As connoisseurs of sonic texture, the band often lets their clever sound sculptures carry a track, however, the band really hits their mark when they find great melodies to go with their cool sounds. Highlights include the robotic rocker "You Must Create," sweet computer pop ode "Plug Me In" and the baroque culmination of their "Regent" saga, "The Regent Is Dead," which closes the album.
