Achilles Hospice

Achilles Hospice
Even though technical metalcore is dead there are still a couple bands that pop up and blow minds. Enter Achilles and their latest full-length, Hospice. Heavy as can be, this brings to mind champions of the genre such as Deadguy or Playing Enemy within minutes of bruising opener "Curtains.” Combining eerie melodies with a non-stop drum workout and vocals that are actually powerful, it’s a hell of a way to start the disc. Sometimes the spirit of old school hardcore is evoked, as on "To the Teeth” and 48-second rager "In These Stark Halls.” And things never relent, the entire 29-minute disc being worthy of your full attention. Half an hour is the perfect length for tunes like this. Sure, even with a brief playing time it still turns into one big assault 20 minutes in but with music this good, the assault is sweet pain. Just check out the riff and drum interplay on tracks like "We Are Fixtures,” drool over the nice layout in the accompanying booklet and check out the pristine production. Achilles deserve your attention. (Hex) (Hex)
