With only five songs on their third CD, Vancouver's the 9:45 span a range of sounds and styles without owning any one of them. Some might say they transcend styles, but I hate talk like that about a pop band. And that's pretty much what the 9:45 are - an interesting if eclectic blend of soul and rock with really good guitar hooks and rumbling bass lines. The minimalist production job takes away from their sound, but with more studio time and money they could release a real high-quality CD. Singer Jeanette Peake's vocal ambitions sometimes go beyond her ability, but the musical arrangements accompanying her got it going on. And they have a really cool name.
