The Weeknd, Drake and Justin Bieber Lead 2016 Juno Nominees

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Feb 2, 2016

The Juno Awards are set to honour the finest in Canadian music once again this year, and now the 2016 nominees have been revealed.

The full list of nominations was announced at a press conference this morning in Toronto, as well as via Twitter

Leading the pack this year is Toronto-born R&B superstar the Weeknd, who picked up six nods in the categories of Juno Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year and R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.

Drake and Justin Bieber tied for the second best haul, garnering five nominations each. Both artists are up for Juno Fan Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year, while Drake racked up a nod for Rap Recording of the Year and Bieber is up for Pop Album of the Year.

Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes are each up for four awards, while Buffy Sainte-Marie, City and Colour, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Walk Off the Earth each received three nominations.

Continuing on her trajectory towards world domination, UK singer Adele even managed to rack up a handful of nominations for her songwriting partnership with Tobias Jesso Jr. and her Canadian-directed music video for "Hello." Xavier Dolan's clip will be up against clips from Death From Above 1979, PUP, SonReal and Kalle Mattson on the Video of the Year ballot.

Other categories facing steep competition include Adult Alternative Album of the Year, which will see Daniel Romano, Joel Plaskett, Mo Kenney, Tobias Jesso Jr. and Whitehorse face off against each other, while Alternative Album of the Year finds Braids, Destroyer, Majical Cloudz, U.S. Girls and (name change apparently still pending) Viet Cong all nominated.

As for fans of heavier fare, they'll want to keep an eye on the Heavy Metal Album of the Year race, which pits Cancer Bats, Diemonds, Fuck the Facts, Kataklysm and KEN Mode against one another.

As previously reported, the ceremony will take place in Calgary on April 3, marking the award show's 45th year of handing out prestigious prizes. Shawn Mendes and the Weeknd have been confirmed to perform during the show. Leading up to the awards giveaway, the city of Calgary will be hosting Juno Week events from March 28 through April 3.
