Published Jun 13, 2011On Friday (June 10), garage rocker Jack White and his wife (and occasional collaborator) Karen Elson announced that they would be throwing a party to celebrate their impending divorce.
While they're celebrating with dancing and drinks, we're going to recognize Jack and Karen's split in our own way: with a list of the Ten Most Memorable Music Divorces.
Some of these break-ups have been smooth, but others have been drawn out, messy and embarrassingly public. Some have inspired career-defining work, while others have signalled the beginning of an artistic and personal decline. From good to bad to downright bizarre, these are the break-ups that we'll never forget.
The Ten Most Memorable Music Divorces:
10. Avril Lavigne and Deryck Whibley
In the early/mid-2000s, Avril Lavigne and Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley were arguably the top power couple of the Canadian music business. They married in 2006, but it didn't last -- they split in 2009 and made the divorce official in 2010. Since then, both artists have failed to live up to their past successes: Avril's recent Goodbye Lullaby was her first album ever not to top the Canadian charts. As for Whibley, his most newsworthy moment was getting beaten up in Japan.
9. Tammy Wynette and Euple Byrd / Don Chapel / George Jones / Michael Tomlin
Tammy Wynette penned "Stand by Your Man," which stands as one of the most popular and frequently covered songs in music history. Ironically, Wynette didn't embody the lyrics of her tune, as she had four marriages crumble between 1966 and 1976. The last of those marriages, to Michael Tomlin, lasted just weeks before it was annulled. Luckily, this story has a happy ending: Wynette remained married to her fifth husband, George Richey, for 20 years before her death in 1998.
8. Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall
Rolling Stones legend Mick Jagger was with Jerry Hall for over 20 years, and they had four children before parting ways in 1999. The relationship began as a common-law partnership, but they eventually wed in a Balinese ceremony in 1990. Here's the punchline: after the split, their marriage was found to be not legally binding. That sure makes divorce proceedings easier.
