Your Inactive Netflix Account Will Be Terminated

Your Inactive Netflix Account Will Be Terminated
If you've been letting your Netflix account sit idle, your subscription is about to be cancelled.

The company has announced it's starting to send notices to customers who haven't watched anything for 12 months or more, asking them whether or not they want to keep their membership. Netflix is also putting the call out to those who haven't streamed anything in the past two years.

If the inactive Netflix members do not reply to the company stating they want to keep subscribing, the streamer will automatically cancel their subscription.

According to Netflix, inactive accounts only make up less than 0.5 percent of its membership base, meaning there are only likely a few hundred thousand such accounts, according to a post from Netflix director of product innovation Eddy Wu.

So why is Netflix even bothering with this? Wu explained that it's an act of goodwill, saying that "we hope this new approach saves people some hard-earned cash."

So if you haven't been binging anything in a few years and want to keep that Netflix subscription going, you should finally find out why those Stranger Things kids are obsessed with Eggos or why this Joe Exotic has claimed the title of Tiger King.

You can read full's message from Netflix about the initiative down below:

You know that sinking feeling when you realize you signed up for something but haven't used it in ages? At Netflix, the last thing we want is people paying for something they're not using.

So we're asking everyone who has not watched anything on Netflix for a year since they joined to confirm they want to keep their membership. And we'll do the same for anyone who has stopped watching for more than two years. Members will start seeing these emails or in app notifications this week. If they don't confirm that they want to keep subscribing, we'll automatically cancel their subscription. If anyone changes their mind later, it's really easy to restart Netflix. These inactive accounts represent less than half of one percent of our overall member base, only a few hundred thousand, and are already factored into our financial guidance.

We've always thought it should be easy to sign up and to cancel. So, as always, anyone who cancels their account and then rejoins within 10 months will still have their favorites, profiles, viewing preferences and account details just as they left them. In the meantime, we hope this new approach saves people some hard earned cash.
