Will Smith's Genie in the Live-Action 'Aladdin' Remake Isn't Blue and Twitter Is Confused

The upcoming Disney live-action remake of Aladdin already came under fire for "browning up" white actors, and now fans are puzzled by the first look at Will Smith as the Genie — because he isn't blue.

Entertainment Weekly revealed the first photos of the cast, including Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, and Twitter has a lot of feelings about the lack of Genie's signature blue hue.

EW notes that "Will Smith's Genie in his blue floating lamp form isn't quite finished," and Smith himself assured fans that the character will be substantially altered by CGI in the final film.

Director Guy Ritchie even gave some more insight in what he hopes the final character will look like. "I wanted a muscular 1970s dad," he said. "He was big enough to feel like a force — not so muscular that he looked like he was counting his calories, but formidable enough to look like you knew when he was in the room."

Instead, what we got is pictured above.

Aladdin is due in theatres on May 24, 2019.
