Werner Herzog Has Never Seen Any 'Star Wars' or Jon Favreau Films Despite Starring in 'The Mandalorian'

He does watch 'WrestleMania' and 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians,' though

Jon Favreau's Star Wars spinoff series The Mandalorian is officially here (if you can get Disney+ to work), meaning we finally get to see Werner Herzog enter the Star Wars canon. That's not really a big deal to him, however. In a new interview, Herzog revealed he's never seen any Star Wars. He's also never seen any of Favreau's work.

In a new interview with Variety, Herzog was asked if he felt any pressure working with Favreau considering his recent high-profile films. "I do not know what other films he has made," Herzog said.

As for the Star Wars franchise, Herzog has still never seen any of it. "No, it doesn't really matter," he said of the franchise. "You see, it was a very lively exchange, man-to-man so to speak, between Jon Favreau and myself. I was not tossed into unknown territory. I was very well briefed. I knew what was expected of me — I knew the interior landscape of the character and I knew the exterior landscape.

Herzog continued: "You shouldn't feel upset that I haven't seen the Star Wars films; I hardly see any films. I read. I see two, three, maybe four films per year."

That said, Herzog is a little more of a TV buff. "Sometimes I see things that are completely against my cultural nature," he admitted. "I was raised with Latin and Ancient Greek and poetry from Greek antiquity, but sometimes, just to see the world I live in, I watch WrestleMania."

That's not the only high-drama, heightened reality TV he's watching. "You have to know what a good amount of the population is watching. Do not underestimate the Kardashians. As vulgar as they may be, it doesn't matter that much, but you have to find some sort of orientation. As I always say, the poet must not close his eyes, must not avert them."

The Mandalorian is available now on Disney+, and Werner will not be watching.

"Well, I can only watch it on Disney+. I'd have to sign up for it," he concluded. "So far, I have only signed up for one streaming platform, and that's Criterion. They have hundreds of films, and every one of them is great."
