Watch a Captioned Trailer for Riz Ahmed's New Film 'Sound of Metal'
Riz Ahmed's performance in the forthcoming film Sound of Metal has been much buzzed about since it debuted at TIFF in 2019. In our review, we called it "an inventive exploration of acquired deafness, anchored by a strong directorial style and nuanced performances from its leads." Soon to be available to all audiences, today we're happy to present a captioned trailer for the film.

In the film, Ahmed plays a drummer in a two-piece noise rock/art metal group (complete with plenty of recognizable band t-shirts). Unfortunately, his tinnitus results in permanent hearing loss.

"It was important to me that the film was genuine and visceral in its approach, and that the story provide a window into a culture and way of life that encapsulates so many people: Deaf, hard of hearing, and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults)," director Darius Marder said in a press release. "In order to create an authentic experience of deafness, Riz wore custom devices in his ears that emitted a white noise of varying intensity, thus allowing him to experience the closest approximation to progressive deafness that we could simulate, including the inability to hear even his own voice."
