To celebrate the arrival of a new trailer for James Cameron's long-awaited Avatar sequel, the film was further teased on a natural canvas typically reserved for royalty or wonderous heroines: the majestic Niagara Falls.

At the border of Ontario and New York state this week, 600 drones took flight over the falls for a light show that formed the wordmark for Cameron's highly-anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water.

In tandem with the drone display, never-before-seen footage from the film was projected over the falls. New York's ABC11 notes that the lights are visible as far as three miles away, depending on cloud cover.

Cameron knows a thing or two about The Way of Water when it comes to Niagara Falls, having attended high school at Stamford Collegiate while living with his family in nearby Chippawa, ON.

In a video chronicling the display, the director shares, "I'm pretty excited that this footage is being shown for the first time ever right in my hometown, and not only that, but coming to life over the backdrop of one of the world's great natural wonders."

You can watch both the light show and new film trailer in the players below. Avatar: The Way of Water arrives in theatres December 16.
