Director Cary Fukunaga had us wrapped around his finger with his work on the first season of HBO's gritty crime series True Detective. The filmmaker is serving as executive producer on the show's second season, and he's just announced his next project.
The filmmaker is developing a project with Brokeback Mountain screenwriters Larry McMurty and Diana Ossana. Fukunaga will also serve as producer and director.
The film follows the true story of Joe and Jadin Bell. The latter was a 15-year-old gay sophomore who was bullied so much that he took his own life. Because of this, Joe embarked on a walk across America to spread awareness about prejudice and bullying.
The yet-to-be-titled film is the first project being fully developed by A24 Films, the company responsible for distributing films like Spring Breakers, Under the Skin and Ex Machina.
"Joe and Jadin Bell's story is a poignant reminder of how precious life is, and a life-affirming example of love transcending the prejudice and victimization familiar to many," the company said in a statement. "Cary is a truly exceptional filmmaker. We are honored to help bring his vision of this incredible true story to screen. With the legendary talents of Larry and Diana writing the script, we have no doubt this will be a profoundly emotional and unforgettable film."
