After postponing its 2020 edition last month, Toronto's Hot Docs festival has revealed its lineup ahead of announcing any firm dates "to honour and celebrate the hard work of the filmmakers and to support them as they seek opportunities in these difficult times."
With 226 films on its roster, the festival is touting 12 interdisciplinary projects from 63 countries in 18 programs this year.
The films selected for this year's Hot Docs fall into the following programs: Artscapes, Canadian Spectrum, Conserve & Protect, Deep Dive, DocX, Focus on Raymonde Provencher, International Spectrum, Made in Northern Ireland, Markers, Nightvision, Outstanding Achievement Retrospective, Persister, Redux, Revisionaries, Shorts, Special Presentations, the Changing Face of Europe, and World Showcase.
Director of programming, Shane Smith, offered the following statement about this year's Hot Docs programming:
Documentaries are vitally important to helping us understand the world we live in, particularly at this challenging moment in time. This year's Hot Docs program features the best of global documentary storytelling from 63 countries, all of which will connect us to each other in ways that inspire, inform and illuminate.
Originally scheduled for April 30 to May 10, the festival was postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Back in March, organizers announced they would find a way to bring the fest online, "to virtually deliver the event's valuable pitch presentations and one-on-one meetings."
So far no new dates have been selected, but organizers do plan to go ahead with its program eventually. This year's 26th anniversary edition will mark the first time the festival has had to reschedule due to such extenuating circumstances.
