Tom Hanks has announced he has contracted the coronavirus.

On Wednesday (March 11), the 63-year-old actor made the announcement, saying both he and his wife Rita Wilson have been diagnosed with COVID-19 while in Australia.

"Hello, folks. Rita and I are down here in Australia," Hanks said in a statement. "We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the coronavirus, and were found to be positive."

Hanks is currently in Australia to start filming a movie about the life of Elvis Presley.

The Oscar-winning actor added that he and his wife "will be tested, observed and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires."

Hanks continued, "Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We'll keep the world posted and updated."

Today the World Health Organization officially declared the novel coronavirus a pandemic. Over 118,000 cases have been reported globally in 114 countries
