With his upcoming space movie from director Doug Liman, Tom Cruise is set to be the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station, Variety reports.

Though the as-yet-untitled film project will reportedly take place mostly on Earth, Cruise's character — described as "a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth" — will apparently need to travel to space in order to save the day.

"Tom Cruise is taking us to space. He's taking the world to space. That's the plan," Universal Pictures head Donna Langley told the BBC. "We have a great project in development with Tom, that does contemplate him doing just that. Taking a rocket up to the space station and shooting and hopefully being the first civilian to do a spacewalk outside of the space station."

As previously reported, Cruise is collaborating with NASA and Elon Musk's SpaceX company on the space scenes, and the film's budget is set at roughly $200 million USD.
