Thanks to the social distancing measures required by the COVID-19 pandemic, the new normal for 2020 is to put every film festival online. Following suit, the Ottawa International Animation Festival is going virtual.
For its 44th edition, the festival has had its run extended beyond the usual five days it has operated in the past. The fest will now take place from September 23 to October 4.
"At first we wanted to mimic the live event as much as possible, but then the team started to think of ways we could take the things people love about the OIAF and make it more suited to an at-home experience," managing director Kelly Neall said in a press release. "It's a chance to get creative and try some new things."
The OIAF team is currently researching the best platform to securely showcase their films. They've also got plans for artist talks, workshops and opportunities for people to virtually meet with schools and recruiters.
The OIAF's industry event, the Animation Conference, will also move online. As director Azarin Sohrabkhani says, "This is a great opportunity to meet with even more potential partners than the live event since travel has been taken out of the equation."
