'The Emoji Movie' Trailer Makes Us Want to Throw Our Smartphones Into the Sea

We've been hearing all kinds of terrifying things about The Emoji Movie for the last year or so, and now the day we've been dreading has arrived. Yes, the film has a trailer.

There were early teasers with famously deadpan comedian Steven Wright which suggested The Emoji Movie might have a modicum of self-awareness, but the full-on trailer brings us back into the pessimism camp.

The film stars T.J. Miller as a "meh" emoji living inside a boy's smartphone. There's a half-assed Inside Out ripoff plot about the need to feel other emotions, but mostly this looks like it's a vehicle for some branded synergy with apps like Candy Crush.

The animation looks like one of those weird CGI ads that used to try and trick kids into texting expensive numbers on MuchMusic commercial breaks. And lest you think Sir Patrick Stewart was going to keep it classy, he spends the last few seconds of the trailer smearing shit all over a bathroom.
