'The Drew Barrymore Show' Writers Decline to Return Following WGA Deal

Barrymore was roundly criticized for attempting to bring the show back on air before a deal was reached

Scabbing doesn't make you friends. Drew Barrymore learned this the hard way last month when she announced that The Drew Barrymore Show would be returning to television before a deal had been reached in the WGA strike.

A week later, Barrymore revealed that she'd be pausing the show's return until the WGA strike concluded following serious backlash and a few cancellations attributed to her decision.

The strike ended only about a week after that, so the whole thing feels like a major unforced error from a star who was enjoying more-or-less total adoration prior. And the repercussions of that decision continue to resonate, as it's been revealed that while her show is set to return on October 16, her WGA writers will not.

As noted by The Hollywood Reporter, Chelsea White, Cristina Kinon and Liz Koe have declined an offer to return to The Drew Barrymore Show. The production is now interviewing new writers and will be in compliance with the guild.

The trio — who share the title of co-head writer and have been writing for the series since its first season — were seen picketing outside the show's Manhattan studio on multiple days during the strike.

"It is a bummer to hear that the show is going back because it sends a message that union writers are not valuable," White told The Hollywood Reporter last month after it was revealed that Barrymore's show would return before the strike had ended.
