We thought it couldn't get any worse than Queen guitarist Brian May literally ripping his ass while gardening, but Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro has assuredly one-upped him following a freak bowling accident.

Yesterday (September 23), Valastro shared a photo on Instagram from hospital, showing his heavily-bandaged forearm and hand raised in a sling. "I was involved in a terrible accident a few days ago," he wrote in the caption. "What do you think of my new accessory?"

But what exactly does a freak bowling accident entail? As a representative for the Cake Boss told CNN, Valastro sustained the hand injury while trying to repair a malfunctioning bowling pin setter in his home bowling alley.

"After trying to release the bowling pin from the cage mechanism, his right hand became lodged and compressed inside the unit," Valastro's representative told the network, adding that his hand was impaled three times by a 1-1/2" metal rod, between his ring and middle fingers.

Valastro's sons helped cut through the metal rod to release him, ahead of receiving emergency surgery on Sunday (September 20) at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. Valastro then underwent a second surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

"It will be an uphill battle as it's Buddy's dominant right hand and he will need prolonged recovery and therapy," the representative said.

We wish nothing but the best for Valastro throughout his recuperation.
