After news of the show's return broke back in June, more details have been revealed surrounding the reboot of The Boondocks.
The reboot from original creator Aaron McGruder and Sony Pictures Animation was given a two-season, 24-episode order by HBO Max. The reboot will arrive in the fall of 2020 with a 50-minute special.
All 55 episodes of the show's original run will also be available on HBO Max when the service launches in spring 2020.
"There's a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today," McGruder said in a statement. "It's crazy how different the times we live in are now — both politically and culturally — more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There's a lot to say and it should be fun."
McGruder will serve as showrunner and executive producer for the reboot. As previously reported, the revival is said to "[chronicle] the adventures of the Freeman family against the evil local government tyrant Uncle Ruckus, who rules the fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland with an iron fist."
"The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like 'The Trial of Robert Kelly,' 'The Fundraiser' and 'The Story of Gangstalicious,'" added HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly. "Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated the Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max."
Based on McGruder's comic strip of the same name, The Boondocks animated series premiered in November 2005 on Adult Swim. McGruder, who also revived the comic in February of this year, was not involved in the show's fourth and final season.
