Movie theatres across the globe have been shut down in order to slow the global coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has caused many film distributors to postpone new releases or move the releases online. Now, film distributors have teamed up with independent movie theatres across North America, including several in Canada, to give viewers access to new movies in isolation while allowing them to support their local institutions.

Both Film Movement's "Virtual Cinema" and Kino Lorber's "Kino Marquee" programs offer short-term access to new movies for $12 each. Each movie offers a different selection of partnering theatres from across Canada and the U.S. Viewers choose which theatre they wish to support, and the chosen theatre will receive half the ticket's cost.

"Virtual Cinema" has announced titles including Jan Komasa's Oscar-nominated 2019 drama Corpus Christi and Diao Yinan's 2019 crime thriller The Wild Goose Lake. "Kino Marquee" currently features one title: Bacurau, Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles's weird western, which won the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
