Makiko Futaki, a talented animator with the legendary Studio Ghibli, has passed away. She died at the age of 57 on May 13 from an unspecified illness.
Futaki was an animator on some of Studio Ghibli's most iconic features, including Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and many others.
Outside of the studio, her work also appeared in other massive animated films. Most notably, she was a key animator on the 1988 classic Akira.
