Streaming Services Outpaced Cable TV for the First Time Ever in July 2022

Streaming usage on platforms like Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, HBO Max and more surpassed that of cable TV usage in the US for the first time ever last month, according to American market measurement firm Nielsen.

Streaming content made up 34.8 percent of all TV usage in the States in July 2022, while cable dropped a full 2 percent from June to 34.4 percent. Year-over-year, cable dropped a whopping 8.9 percent compared to 2021.

It's important to note that while cable is down, its portion of usage combined with broadcast television's 21.6 percent still indicates that most television consumption is happening in the traditional format.

Still, streaming's portion of the pie averaged nearly 191 billion minutes per week in July, according to Nielsen, and it's only been going up since March, growing by an average of 1 percent each month.

The Hollywood Reporter credits streaming's successes to blockbuster programming on Netflix — like Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy — despite the company's recent shortcomings. Netflix remains the top individual streams-earning platform, with 8 percent of overall TV viewing.
