Jerome Buting has announced that his former client — Steven Avery, subject of Netflix's hit true-crime docuseries Making a Murderer — has contracted COVID-19 in prison and has subsequently entered quarantine in his cell.
According to a tweet from earlier today, the criminal defence attorney has also been in contact with Avery's girlfriend Sandy Greenman, who says that despite isolation, Avery remains "in good spirits." Greenman also noted that his symptoms were "short-lived."
Despite no longer representing Avery, Buting also added #FreeStevenAvery to his announcement.
Hotshot lawyer Kathleen Zellner has represented Avery since Season 2 of Making a Murderer. She has yet to speak publicly about her client's diagnosis.
In 2005, photographer Teresa Halbach disappeared in Wisconsin. Avery was convicted of her murder two years later, but the sentence has been heavily contested over the years. Avery has insisted on his innocence since day one. By 2015, Making a Murderer brought the case to the global stage, leading many more to consider his possible innocence in the case.
