Earlier this month, the Academy Award nominees were announced and, just like last year, the Oscar race will be almost completely white. Understandably, a number of people were upset over its predominantly Caucasian nominees and now some prominent film figures have called for an Oscars boycott.
Over on Instagram, Spike Lee shared a photo of Martin Luther King, Jr. in honour of the great civil rights activist's birthday today (January 18). The photo arrived with a long and impassioned caption where Lee explained that he will not attend the awards ceremony this year.
He added, "As I See It, The Academy Awards Is Not Where The 'Real' Battle Is. It's In The Executive Office Of The Hollywood Studios And TV And Cable Networks. This Is Where The Gate Keepers Decide What Gets Made And What Gets Jettisoned To 'Turnaround' Or Scrap Heap. People, The Truth Is We Ain't In Those Rooms And Until Minorities Are, The Oscar Nominees Will Remain Lilly White."
In addition, Jada Pinkett Smith pointed out the hypocritical way people of colour are treated at the Oscars with a series of pointed tweets:

People can only treat us in the way in which we allow. With much respect in the midst of deep disappointment. J (pt 3)
