It's been 12 years since Seth Rogen and James Franco got stoned out of their minds in the action comedy Pineapple Express. When it first arrived, the movie was a huge hit — and Rogen has revealed there was nearly a sequel.
Appearing on The Howard Stern Show, Rogen admitted that he nearly had a sequel green lit, but Sony broke down over budget concerns.
"We tried to make one and thanks to the Sony hack you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it," he said. "It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it."
As Variety points out, the leaked Sony emails revealed that producer Judd Apatow fought for a $50 million budget, while Sony refused to budge on $45 million. "Marijuana is so popular now!" Apatow said in one of his emails. The sequel discussions fell apart over the budget.
"I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don't like giving away money. Weird thing," Rogen said.
