Scream Dream

Donald Fisher

In the horror genre, there are always films that burn holes into our memories with shocking and utterly grotesque images. Some of these films evoke blood-curdling screams, while others provoke uncontrollable laughter. Scream Dreams falls into the latter group, as it's one of the most hilariously awful films you'll ever see. Director Donald Fisher (who polluted the genre with such "classics" as Cannibal Hookers and An Erotic Vampire in Paris) helmed this 1989 satanic dud early on in his sleazy directorial career and it shows, as the very few viewers of this DVD will be treated to a grainy Betamax transfer of what appears to be a cheesy home video. (And not of the clever cinema vérité variety.) To give this atrocity a proper synopsis would be to suggest Scream Dream could be considered an actual film and bearing in mind the DVD synopsis is riddled with grammatical errors, readers do not need to waste their time on a plot line of a "film" that features a puppet demon that draws ketchup from its topless victims, a she-demon that resembles Elizabeth Bathory from the Nightmare board game series, Sorority House Massacre 2's Melissa Moore's svelte, Kelly Kapowski-inspired dance moves and an end credits sequence that gives top billing to a blonde walking by the camera eating cotton candy in one scene. The hilarity doesn't stop there, as the film is also full of SRS trailers, which include such "reputable" classics as Terror on Blood Fart Lake and I Spit on Your Corpse and Piss on Your Grave. Scream Dream may be one the reasons why critics put down horror as a sick and perverse expression of male adolescent sexuality, but it is also a future YouTube masterpiece waiting to be uploaded and made fun of. Move over Troll 2!, there's a new best worst movie in town.
