Saoirse Ronan Never Wants Greta Gerwig to Make a Movie Without Her

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 30, 2020

Saoirse Ronan and Greta Gerwig have proven themselves to be cinematic soulmates with Lady Bird and Little Women, so it's only natural that they've become a bit possessive over each other. In fact, Ronan said she never wants Gerwig to make a movie without her as a star.

Following this year's Oscar nominations, the pair were sipping mimosas, and as Ronan recounted to The Hollywood Reporter, she said, "I don't want to imagine you making a film without me! I can't stand it!"

Gerwig returned the sentiment, explaining she now gets jealous when Ronan appears in other directors' projects.

"I feel the same way about Saoirse as an actor," Gerwig added. "I know she acts with other people and she should because she's great, but a small part of me becomes incredibly childish for one second."

Ronan appears in Wes Anderson's upcoming film The French Dispatch, and Gerwig appeared in its predecessor Isle of Dogs. Gerwig suspects he has the same possessiveness over Ronan's onscreen talent.

"I could tell that Wes was not 100 percent thrilled that I was working with her," Gerwig revealed. "He loves her. I remember I asked Wes about Saoirse. He read the script and was like, 'Saoirse can do anything. She can do absolutely anything.' I may be projecting, but I think he might've been a little jealous because he's trying to take her back. "

Gerwig also revealed she's going to be acting onstage in a play in the near future, but she hopes to get back to writing afterwards. She sees a long future for her and Ronan's professional relationship and wants to still be making movies together decades from now.

"I'm interested to see what movie we make when Saoirse's in her 50s and I'm in my 60s," she said. "Won't that be interesting? But I always joke about, we'll hear from Saoirse through her agent one day; it'll be like, 'It's a pass. She loves you — of course she would do anything, but not this one.'"

Ronan defensively responded, "Never!"
