Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat Subsequent Moviefilm has arrived at last, and though his zany character has finally been embraced by Kazakhstan and its tourism board, unseen footage shows that some of the film's other subjects have had much more violent reactions to Cohen's antics.
Appearing on Stephen Colbert's Late Show, the filmmaker shared a handful of behind-the-scenes tidbits not shown in his latest political comedy, including some new clips from that anti-masker rally he attended in double disguise.
Unlike what's presented in the film, Cohen explains that his cover was blown at the protest, resulting in a violent clash between his party and the right-wing attendees.
"Some of the militia groups that were in this rally had been antagonizing the Black Lives Matter protesters, so as revenge, some of the Black Lives Matter protesters were coming over to confront them," Cohen explained. "One of them went, 'Oh my God, it's Sacha Baron Cohen!' Word got out that it was me, and then the organizers and a lot of people in the crowd got very angry."
He told Colbert that some of the anti-masker crowd then stormed the stage where he was performing as "Country Steve," and that one of the angry attendees even reached for his gun to scare Cohen off. Cohen and his crew had to make a mad dash to get away from the crowd safely after that.
