As we prepare to enter a new period of Star Wars mania, disdain for George Lucas' three prequel films remains at an all time high. People just can't seem to get over the franchise's Jar Jar Binks era, and they blame Lucas alone for the films' failures. Now, we've learned the films could've possibly been saved had another director stepped up to the plate.
In a new interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast [via A.V. Club], director Ron Howard admitted that George Lucas "didn't necessarily want to direct them."
Further, Howard admitted that he was on the list alongside some other major players. "He told me he had talked to Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and me. I was the third one he spoke to."
Proving that these big-time directors are also big-time dummies, Howard says they all pushed Lucas to complete the films himself. "They all said the same thing: 'George, you should do it!' I don't think anybody wanted to follow up that act at the time. It was an honor, but it would've been too daunting."
Howard also explained that he's turned down a number of comic book movies. "I was never a comic book guy," he admitted. "I like the movies when I see them, especially the origin stories. I never felt like I could be on the set, at 3 o'clock in the morning, tired, with 10 important decisions to make, and know, intuitively, what the story needs. For me, I'd be copycatting and not inventing. I've never said yes to one."
