Robert Eggers Hopes You Aren't Getting as Drunk as 'The Lighthouse' Characters in Quarantine

Last year's unexpectedly quarantine-appropriate seafaring film, Robert Eggers's The Lighthouse, has become especially relevant in recent months, as we all attempt to remain of sound mind while bearing the stresses of isolation.

Eggers knows the psychological thriller is feeling all a bit too real these days — and he wants to make sure that fans aren't replicating the drunken activities of Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson's characters at home right now as a result.

Speaking with GQ, the director talked about the film's fitting prevalence on social media right now due to ongoing lockdown procedures across the world.

"I'm not on social media, but I am aware there's a lot of Lighthouse news right now," Eggers said. "And I'm glad that we could make something that might be helpful in this strange time. I guess The Lighthouse can be a cautionary tale. I hope everyone was like, 'I will not attempt Lighthouse levels of drinking turpentine.'"

The director is currently in quarantine with his family in Belfast, Ireland. Before the pandemic, he had begun work there on his next film, The Northman, which is set to again star Dafoe, as well as Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Bill Skarsgård and Anya Taylor-Joy. Production is currently halted due to coronavirus concerns.
