Published Jun 07, 2020After Riverdale actress Vanessa Morgan publicly called out the creators of the show for the unfair representation of Black characters, writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has responded with an apology and a promise to do better.
"We hear Vanessa. We love Vanessa. She's right. We're sorry and we make the same promise to you that we did to her," Aguirre-Sacasa wrote in a tweet last week (June 4).
"We will do better to honor her and the character she plays," he continued.
Morgan plays Toni Topaz on the Netflix teen drama series. Some have argued that Topaz's one-dimensional character traits — representing both Black and LGBTQ identities — are only written to support the story arcs of her white counterparts.
Last week, Morgan vowed to "no longer take roles that don't properly represent us," after expressing her disappointment with her role in Riverdale.
In addition to her complaints about representation, Morgan also revealed that she is paid the least among the show's leads.
