When not making movies about '70s frat bros or shooting films that take many, many years to complete, indie auteur Richard Linklater also knows his way around some out-there animations. The director of Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly will next deliver the goods with Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Adventure, which has just been bought by Netflix.

The film is set against the backdrop of the 1969 Apollo mission to the moon. It's inspired by Linklater's own childhood, telling the story from the perspective of both the astronauts and the mission control centre.

"It struck me years ago that this was my film to make, from both a chronological and proximity level — I was there, going into 3rd grade," Linklater said in a statement. "Our unique animation style allows both the conjuring of a world long gone, and the flowing, playful expression of memory and imagination.  It's been a fun, creative journey to incorporate things like 3D graphics into a live action shoot to help bring this story to life."

Jack Black will star in the film alongside Zachary Levi, Josh Wiggins. Milo Coy, Lee Eddy, Bill Wise, Natalie L'Amoreaux, Jessica Brynn Cohen, Sam Chipman and Danielle Guilbot.

The film will be a hybrid of hand-drawn and computer animation, with work split between Minnow Mountain in Austin and Submarine in the Netherlands. The film's live-action portion was already wrapped in March 2020.
