Much like the Resident Evil video games themselves, the series' movie franchise is getting a major makeover. Following news of an upcoming Resident Evil Netflix series, we're now finding out that Capcom's classic survival horror property is getting a proper film reboot.

Constantin Film and writer-director Johannes Roberts announced today that we're getting a new Resident Evil origins film. The story will be set in 1998 in Raccoon City, and hopefully like the RE game reboots, the film will bring back some of that old — and arguably lost — magic.

The film will features an array of classic RE characters, and we actually already know the cast as well. Kaya Scodelario will play Claire Redfield, while Hannah John-Kamen will take on Jill Valentine. Avan Jogia, meanwhile, will play Leon S. Kennedy, Robbie Amell will portray Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper will be Albert Wesker and Neal McDonough give us William Birkin.

"With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today's audiences," said Roberts in a statement.

For the unfamiliar, Roberts is the filmmaker behind the thriller 47 Meters Down and its sequel.

Producer Robert Kulzer added, "After a dozen games, six live-action movies and hundreds of pages of fan fiction, we felt compelled to return to the year 1998, to explore the secrets hidden in the walls of the Spenser Mansion and Raccoon City."

So far, it's unclear when the new Resident Evil film could arrive.

The news comes as Resident Evil gets set to release its latest intalment in its long-running video game series with Resident Evil 8: Village, which is expected out in 2021 on PS5.
