Director Leigh Janiak told Exclaim! last year that there were "whispers in the air"

Following the arrival of Netflix's Fear Street Trilogy of films last year, director Leigh Janiak didn't close the door on further franchise instalments. Now, it's been reported that the streaming giant is at work on more Fear Street.

Bloody Disgusting confirms that the rumours of new Fear Street films following last year's trilogy are true, adding that "Netflix is very deep into development" with more details to come.

The site's confirmation follows mention of the rumours by R.L. Stine, author of the original book series the films were loosely adapted from. Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment this month (July 15), he shared, "I also hear ... about more Fear Street movies for Netflix, because the first ones did so well last summer. Those films kind of shocked me, because they were all R-rated, and I've never done anything R-rated! All those teenagers were getting slashed. I was like, 'Suddenly, I have a slasher movie!'"

Speaking with Exclaim! last September about the prospect of new Fear Street films, Janiak divulged, "There are certainly whispers in the air, let me say that."

"The promise of Fear Street, to me, is just so exciting. If you read Goosebumps, you know there's an infinite world laying in front of you. And it's the same thing with Fear Street," the director shared of future plans for the series. "I think that there's a lot of room for amazing standalone movies that maybe follow some of the killers that we've hinted at or didn't have time to explore. Or television, or whatever that may be. And then also, obviously, at the end of our trilogy, you see someone grab the book. There's definitely a bit of open-ended room for the next thing."

The Fear Street Trilogy — Part 1: 1994Part 2: 1978 and Part 3: 1666 — was named among Exclaim!'s Best Films of 2021.
