Netflix Picks Up 'Daredevil' Spin-off Series 'The Punisher'

Netflix and Marvel have been churning out binge-able superhero smashes like Daredevil and Jessica Jones, and recently announced that Luke Cage and Iron Fist would be getting their own series as well. Now, the streaming service and comic corporation have revealed plans to turn the camera on yet another character — the Punisher.

The fictional antihero (a.k.a. Frank Castle) will be the focus of a new series aptly titled The Punisher, and the show will see actor Jon Bernthal in the title role. He currently plays the Punisher in Netflix's Daredevil series.

Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot, known for his previous work on shows like Hannibal and Casualty, will serve as the showrunner.

"For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn't be more excited to dive into his world," Lightfoot said in a statement. "After watching Jon's performance in Marvel's Daredevil, I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own."

In addition to the aforementioned Marvel shows in the works, Netflix has also ordered an ensemble series dubbed The Defenders, which will bring a bunch of the Marvel hero's storylines together in a single show. It is set to begin filming by the end of the year.
