Nas to Produce Erykah Badu-starring Film 'The Land'

BY Alex HudsonPublished Dec 3, 2015

The Land is a skateboarding movie set within the criminal underworld of inner city Cleveland, but music fans will want to pay special attention to this upcoming indie drama, since Nas, Erykah Badu and Machine Gun Kelly are all involved.

It seems that Badu has a starring role in the film, while Machine Gun Kelly will also act. Variety describes the film as being about four teenage skaters who "get caught in the web of a local drug queen-pin," so perhaps Badu is the drug lord in question.

Nas, meanwhile, will executive produce. The Hollywood Reporter writes that he will also produce the soundtrack. It's not clear if Nas will write or perform any music himself, or if he will simply be serving as producer.

The Land is written and directed by Steven Caple Jr. and stars Moises Arias, Rafi Gavron, Michael K. Williams, Kim Coates, Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Ezri Walker, in addition to the aforementioned musicians.

Nas said in a statement, "Huge fan of my man Steve Caple Jr. I think he can become the next great filmmaker. Also, very excited to be working with my former agent and friend Charles King on his first film with his new venture. All great energy around the film, which I believe will yield amazing results."

The flick will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 as part of its Next programming. As previously reported, Sundance will take place in Park City, UT, from January 21 to 31. You can learn more about which films are playing the festival here.

This is by no means Badu's first acting gig. She's been building up a resume since the '90s, and her acting work has becoming particularly prolific in recent years. See her filmography on IMDb.
