Miley Cyrus Reworks Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" for 'Black Mirror'

Black Mirror returns for its fifth season today on Netflix, and it turns out Miley Cyrus' pop star character had some help with her onscreen tunes — from Nine Inch Nails.

The episode dubbed "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" features a teenager obsessed with a robot toy version of a pop idol Ashley O (played by Cyrus), and the fan's favourite song largely borrows from NIN's "Head Like a Hole."

In a press conference [via I News], series creator Charlie Brooker confirmed that he used "Head Like a Hole" as inspiration, and while Brooker admitted he's "not the best lyricist in the world," the song certainly ended up a bit more palatable to teenage girls than the original.

NIN's version features the lyrics:

Head like a hole / Black as your soul / I'd rather die than give you control / Bow down before the one you serve / You're going to get what you deserve.

Cyrus' character in Black Mirror, meanwhile, sings:

Hey there, whoah-ho, I'm on a roll / Riding so high, achieving my goals / I'm so stoked on ambition and verve / I'm gonna get what I deserve.

Thankfully NIN mastermind Trent Reznor approved of the rewrite and the concept behind it.

"Trent got it straight away, it was via email and he was really happy pretty quickly," Brooker said. "He wanted to see the script and I got to rewrite his lyrics in a chirpy way."

In fact, Nine Inch Nails are actually selling collaborative T-shirts that feature the new updated Black Mirror lyrics. Check them out below, and order them from the NIN online shop.
