An official cause of death has not been revealed. According to the New York Times, Engel was ill, but she did not consult doctors because she was a Christian Scientist.
Following her 56-episode run on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Engel went on to appear in The Betty White Show, Goodtime Girls, The Love Boat, Coach, Everybody Loves Raymond, Passions, The Office and Hot in Cleveland.
Her last credited role was a 2018 appearance in Netflix's One Day at a Time.
Throughout her career, Engel was nominated for five Primetime Emmy Award — two for her role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and three for portraying Pat MacDougall on Everybody Loves Raymond.
