Singer turned Oscar-nominated actress Mary J. Blige's next role may come as a surprise to Mudbound viewers. She's signed on to star in an upcoming Netflix series based on Gerard Way's comic book The Umbrella Academy.

The My Chemical Romance singer first published the comic book series in 2007, telling the tales of a dysfunctional superhero family who join forces to uncover the mystery of their father's death. It was illustrated by Gabriel Bá.

Blige will play the role of Cha-Cha, who is described in a press release as "ruthless and unorthodox hitwoman who travels through time to kill assigned targets."

As for those occupying the roles of the titular group, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Ellen Page, Robert Sheehan and Aidan Gallagher have also been confirmed as cast members.

The Netflix adaptation of The Umbrella Academy was written by Jeremy Slater, while Steve Blackman serves as showrunner and executive producer. Bluegrass Television, Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg from Dark Horse Entertainment, and Way each also receive executive producer credits.

The Umbrella Academy is slated to debut on the streaming service later this year.
