Martin Scorsese's long-gestating biopic on Frank Sinatra was rumoured to be no longer in production late last year following rumblings that the surviving family members didn't approve the film. Now, the filmmaker has revealed that project is indeed dead.
Speaking with Sun Media in promoting his new film Silence, Scorsese revealed that Phil Alden Robinson was writing the screenplay before the project was stopped in its development stage. Leonardo DiCaprio had long been rumoured to be playing the renowned crooner in the film.
"We can't do it!" Scorsese said. "I think it is finally over. [The remaining members of the Sinatra family] won't agree to it. Open it up again and I'm there!"
Scorsese also alluded to the more complicated aspects of Sinatra's life in getting the project approved.
"Certain things are very difficult for a family, and I totally understand. But, if they expect me to be doing it, they can't hold back certain things. The problem is that the man was so complex. Everybody is so complex — but Sinatra in particular."
Scorsese's Silence opens in Canadian theatres today (January 6).
