With The Handmaid's Tale being one of modern television's biggest success stories, it's no surprise that its upcoming literary sequel, Margaret Atwood's The Testaments, is now also set to come to the small screen.
The news arrives via Time Magazine and has been confirmed by a rep for the Toronto author's publishing house, Penguin Random House Canada.
While most details are still up in the air, Hulu and MGM will develop the Testaments TV series. Handmaid's Tale creator and showrunner Bruce Miller is also reportedly set to be involved with The Testaments. Time reports he "is involved in discussions about how to best approach the new material."
At this point, it's unclear whether The Testaments will become part of the existing Handmaid's Tale series or become a separate standalone work.
As previously reported, Atwood's The Testaments is set to arrive on September 10. Despite not yet being publicly released, the book is already a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and made the long list for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.
"The Testaments is set 15 years after Offred's final scene and is narrated by three female characters," the Atwood previously revealed.
For the unfamiliar, The Handmaid's Tale was originally published in 1985, telling a frightening tale of a dystopian future where the totalitarian state Gilead overthrows the U.S., leading to a series of disturbing societal changes.
