Williams responded to the uproar on Twitter, admitting that her family were likely the ones most weirded out by her sex scene:
The chatter surrounding the scene mostly concerns the character's age. When Game of Thrones began in 2011, Arya Stark was 11 years old. With characters aging approximately one year per season, that would make her around 18 now. In real life, Williams is 22.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Williams spoke about the scene, saying, "In the beginning, everyone was really respectful. No one wants to make you feel uncomfortable which kind of makes you feel more uncomfortable, because no one wants to look at anything that they shouldn't look at."
As for her co-star in the scene, actor Joe Dempsie (who plays Gendry), he said, "It's obviously slightly strange for me because I've known Maisie since she was 11, 12 years old. At the same time, I don't want to be patronizing toward Maisie — she's a 20-year-old woman."
