Johnny Depp has brought children's lit to the screen with his roles in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland, but his next kids-book-to-screen adaptation could be the biggest one yet. Depp has signed on to co-star in an upcoming sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
The J.K. Rowling-penned film franchise serves as a prequel to the beloved Harry Potter series, telling the tales of Hogwarts textbook author Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) — about 70 years before Potter himself enrolls at the school with his own copy of the titular book.
Depp has now been confirmed as a cast member in an upcoming sequel, though his role has yet to be revealed. According to Deadline, he apparently also makes a cameo in the first film in the series.
The initial instalment of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theatres on November 18. The David Yates-directed blockbuster is the first of five films in the Warner Bros.-produced franchise.
