Jodie Foster Calls Superhero Movies a "Phase That's Lasted a Little Too Long"

"Hopefully people will be sick of it soon"

Much like Martin Scorsese and John Woo, Jodie Foster is getting fed up with superhero movies dominating the mainstream film discourse.

In conversation with Elle, Foster explained that, in her eyes, the shtick is getting played out.

"It's a phase. It's a phase that's lasted a little too long for me, but it's a phase, and I've seen so many different phases. Hopefully people will be sick of it soon," she said. "The good ones — like Iron ManBlack Panther, The Matrix — I marvel at those movies, and I'm swept up in the entertainment of it, but that's not why I became an actor. And those movies don't change my life. Hopefully there'll be room for everything else."

Ignoring the irony of her word choice in saying she "marvels" at superhero movies and including The Matrix in the mix, Foster certainly leads by example.

The twice-decorated Oscar-winner, who is just weeks removed from another award-worthy turn in Nyad and gearing up for a role in True Detective, encouraged young actors to avoid big franchises in their careers.

"You can go away for two years and have a life and come back and there will be work for you," she said. "Yeah, maybe it won't be in some franchise, but what do you care? This is your life.'"

If The Marvels' box office performance is any indication, Foster is far from alone in her belief that comic book movies are getting phased out.
