James Franco, Converge and Our Annual Holiday Gift Guide Fill Exclaim!'s November Issue

BY Ava MuirPublished Nov 8, 2017

Before we wrap up the insane year that has been 2017, we're taking some time to look forward to the impending holiday season with our November Issue. We've pored over what's new and exciting in the world of entertainment for inspiration to include in our annual Gift Guide, filled with perfect suggestions for the pop culture fanatic in your life. Of course, our latest issue is also filled with artist interviews, film features and music and movie reviews. To fully immerse yourself, you're going to have to grab a physical copy, but for now, here's a glimpse at what you'll find in Exclaim!'s November Issue.

Gracing this month's cover is none other than James Franco. In our interview, the creative delves deep into the making of his new film The Disaster Artist, based on the memoir about making The Room, the cultishly beloved "(best) worst movie ever made." Says Franco, "This subject matter has everything that I want — it's an examination of the artistic process, albeit through this very lowbrow lens. I think I did a lot of things to balance out my interests and proclivities and take a subject that I'm interested in and then elevate it with these collaborations."

Our Converge timeline takes you through the masterful hardcore rockers' nearly three-decade career, from their formation based on a mutual interest of Motörhead and Judas Priest to the personal unhappiness with their most recent release, The Dusk in Us. Pick up a print edition of Exclaim! to explore the Massachusetts-bred quartet's past and present and find out which Converge albums we deem essential.

Whether you're shopping for the film buff, bookworm or music lover in your life, our annual Holiday Gift Guide for the Entertainment Obsessed has got you covered. We've carefully selected the best books, apparel, vinyl and gear to help ease some of your holiday season stress and satisfy every friend and family member.

Having just released his sixth full-length Once Upon a Hell of a Time, East coast rocker Matt Mays took our monthly Questionnaire, while Grammy-winning musician and producer Matthew Burnett offered us a look inside his Scarborough, ON studio space in this month's Music School. Having worked with the likes of Drake, Eminem and Daniel Caesar (with whom he's currently on tour), the 26-year-old is a highly regarded producer in the Toronto scene. "Everybody wants to know what's Toronto's secret, like 'You guys have the sauce over there,'" he tells us. But the key to producers like Burnett's skill is simple: "We have nothing else to do but stay inside, work on music and do what we love."

As always, this issue is brimming with plenty of in-depth features on your favourite artists: Ben Cook discusses hardcore heroes No Warning's return to the scene with Torture Culture, the band's first full-length in over a decade; Julien Baker acknowledges the influences of her battles with mental illness and substance abuse on her stunning sophomore effort Turn Out the Lights; Margo Price talks about how not limiting herself was essential to making All American Made; acclaimed MC and producer Big K.R.I.T. divulges about his double album 4eva Is a Mighty Long Time; Dan Bejar reflects on the negativity of Destroyer's latest LP ken; Greta Gerwig speaks to the importance of depicting women's relationships in her solo directorial debut Lady Bird; and we take a look back on our history with Sloan in honour of Exclaim!'s 25th anniversary.

November's Exclaim! features even more interviews with the likes of Maylee Todd, Clairmont The Second, the Weather Station and Primitive Man, as well as an abundance of album reviews. Be sure to snag a fresh copy of Exclaim!'s November issue next time you're out for coffee, record shopping or at a show.
