It's been seven long years since James Cameron unleashed Avatar, his CGI shroom trip about blue aliens that plug their ponytails into one another. The film's long-awaited sequel has been pushed back again and again, with a release date set for 2018. Now, the director has said there'll be another three sequels in the series.
Yes, that brings the total to five movies about 3-D blue people chilling in the forest from Thumbelina. Speaking at CinemaCon [via Deadline], Cameron said, "We're making four epic films that stand alone but together form a saga."
Later, he added, "I've been working with top four screenwriters and designers in the world to design the world of Avatar going forward. The environments, new cultures, whatever it takes to life. From what I'm seeing the art on the world …in pure imagination beyond the first film. I'm speechless."
The first Avatar sequel will hit theatres in December 2018. The sequels will follow in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
