Hugh Grant has opened up about contracting coronavirus and how it caused him to lose his sense of smell.

Speaking with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show, Grant explained that he caught the virus back in February and has since tested positive for antibodies. He also went into detail about his range of symptoms, including his loss of smell, which caused him to start sniffing pretty much anything — including garbage — to get the sense back.

"I couldn't smell anything," Grant explained.

"I was walking down a street one day, and I thought, 'I can't smell a damn thing,' and you start to panic because, by then, people had just started to talk about this as a symptom," he said.

"And I started sniffing flowers, nothing. And then you get more and more desperate — I started sniffing in garbage cans," he continued. "You want to sniff strangers' armpits because you just can't smell anything. I eventually went home and sprayed my wife's Chanel No. 5 directly into my face. Couldn't smell a thing."

Grant also explained that he felt like he had an immense weight on his chest and his eyeballs felt "about three sizes too big" during the peak of his infectious state.

The actor recounted his story from London, England, where he's quarantined amid the city's second lockdown.
