Hoosiers: Collector's Edition David Anspaugh

Hoosiers: Collector's Edition David Anspaugh
This classic basketball film is given the deluxe treatment with this collector's edition. Based on the true story of how a hard-nosed coach named Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) led a small-town Indiana high school team to glory in 1952, the acclaimed film maintains its emotional power 19 years after it was first released. Its heart remains the stirring performances of Hackman and his vibrant supporting cast, including Barbara Hershey, who plays hard-to-get as Dale's love interest Myra Fleener, and Dennis Hopper, who is memorable in his supporting role as Shooter, the town drunk and hoops expert. Then there is Dale's team, a group of non-acting b-ballers who more than hold their own on-screen. The fascinating extras reveal that the nervous screen stars were actually given acting lessons by coaches Hackman and Hopper. In the accompanying documentary, Hoosier History: The Truth Behind The Legend, we learn that director David Anspaugh and writer/producer Angelo Pizzo intentionally cast unknowns for the team to make the film as believable as possible. This featurette also provides unique insight into the importance of basketball in the state of Indiana through new interviews with the cast and crew, including Hackman and Hopper, former Milan and Muncie basketball players from 1954, the Indiana Pacers' Reggie Miller and head coach Rick Carlisle. Viewers can even trace the film's dramatic final shot back to the original contest that inspired it, as this edition includes vintage footage of the 1954 Milan versus Muncie Indiana high school championship game. Fans of both Hoosiers and basketball have plenty to cheer about with this excellent new edition. Plus: deleted scenes, audio commentary, photo gallery. (MGM)
